O'Sullivan Sets Up Wilson Final
Share:

Ronnie O’Sullivan overcame a gutsy Anthony McGill on Saturday to book his place in the Dafabet English Open final on Sunday, where he will take on Kyren Wilson. O’Sullivan, who had previously knocked out Jack Lisowksi, John Higgins, Zhang Yong, Mark Davis and Zhang Anda in the earlier rounds, started his semi-final in supreme fashion and quickly found himself 3-0 ahead.

McGill managed to get on the board in the next, making a break of 57, but his opponent responded with a fantastic 139 in the fifth frame, restoring the three-frame advantage. However, the Scot was not done yet and he rattled off the next two frames, taking the scores to 4-3, but O’Sullivan managed to keep his cool and made a break of 133 to win the match 6-4. ‘The Rocket’, who is 6/1 to win a sixth world championship next year, has set up a final clash against fellow Englishman Wilson, who is seeking his second ranking title, on Sunday.

Wilson, who won gold at the World Games this year, managed to overcome rising Swiss star Alexander Ursenbacher in the other semi-final, running out a 6-3 winner. The 25-year-old from Northamptonshire had too much for his opponent, who was featuring in his first-ever semi-final, making breaks of 77, 51, 124, 75, 56 and 90.

O’Sullivan is the firm 2/7 favourite to win the tournament whilst Wilson, who won the only previous meeting between the pair 4-3 at the 2016 Northern Ireland Open, is the 13/5 outsider. The former world number one, who last title came at the 2017 Dafabet Masters, has also been price boosted to 15/2 to win the match 9-4 whilst the odds are now at 10/1 for a 9-3 triumph.
