Carter out to lay down a marker

England’s Ali Carter will be looking to add another title to his collection this week when he competes at the Shanghai Masters where he faces Stuart Carrington on Tuesday. The former world number two has impressed so far this year despite only featuring in five tournaments. He started the season by reaching the semi-finals of the China Championship where Shaun Murphy got the better of him.

Poor results at the Indian Open and European Masters affected his confident at the English Open where he could only reach the last 64. However, he reached the quarter-finals of the International Championship earlier this month and his form should cause Carrington problems. Carrington’s best results have been third-round finishes at the Paul Hunter Classic and English Open and he is priced at 7/2 to win, with Carter available at 2/11. Fans’ favourite Marco Fu is also back in action on Tuesday and he is expected to be too strong for Hossein Vafaei. Fu has reached the semi-finals of the Hong Kong Masters and Six-red World Championship but his performances at ranking tournaments have disappointed. He is priced at 5.50 to win his match 5-1 against Vafaei.

The final game of Tuesday’s session sees Li Yuan face off against Martin Gould, with the latter the heavy favourite. Gould, 36, reached the semi-finals of the International Championship and has shown good form in Asia this season, also reaching the third round of the China Championship. His vast experience could prove too much for Yuan and a 5-2 victory for Gould is available at 14/5.
