McGill expected to live up to favourites tag
Share:

Scotland’s Anthony McGill will be expected to progress in the Riga Masters qualifying as he prepares to take on Kishan Hirani.

The 27-year-old is the 1.15 favourite on Wednesday to win and will be expected to use his vast experience when he meets his Welsh opponent. McGill was left frustrated at the end of last season as he failed to build on his quarter-final appearance at the Players Championship. He lost in the first round of the China Open to Luo Honghao before then being knocked out of the World Championship by Chinese star Ding Junhui.

Hirani proved his class at the top level by breezing through Q school but the clash against McGill promises to be an even bigger test. In the other matches, a close tie is expected as Zhang Anda prepares to meet Tian Pengfei. Anda is 1.95 to win, while Pengfei is the slight favourite at odds of 1.80. In the evening session, Ben Woollaston will look to make a solid start to the new campaign when he does battle with Sam Baird. Woollaston is 1.61, with Baird the 2.25 outsider, but a closer game is expected between Joe Swail and Dechawat Poomjaeng.

Both players are 1.85 to grab the victory due to their recent form while Rory McLeod, Kyren Wilson and Mark Allen are all hot favourites to win their first games of the Riga Masters. The trio play Adam Stefanow, Dominic Dale and Daniel Wells respectively but all three will be expected to cruise into the next round.
