Judd Trump catches fire in German opener
Share:

Judd Trump was delighted to have put the struggles of recent weeks behind him after an impressive 5-3 win over Ben Woollaston in his German Masters opener. Trump was left reeling last month after he squandered a 5-2 lead in his Dafabet Masters semi-final against Kyren Wilson at Alexandra Palace, going on to lose in a deciding frame. The Ace in the Pack then suffered a surprise 6-5 loss against world number 85 Jak Jones in a qualifying match for the China Open.

It ensured that Trump arrived in Berlin needing a pick-me-up of sorts and he certainly got that in his scrap with Woollaston. The 2011 UK Champion fired in breaks of 109, 68, 94, 103 and 78 in completing a victory that tees up a last-16 clash with Joe Perry on Thursday evening. Reflecting on his win, the world number three admitted that he had produced something close to his best snooker. “You aren’t going to get many games in the whole tournament that are a higher standard than that,” said Trump. “Ben was unlucky, I played well and he also played well. If he was against someone who lowered their standard a little bit he would have probably won.”

Trump now faces Perry, ranked 22nd in the world, for a place in the quarter-finals. Trump is favourite at 1/3 to come out on top, while Perry can be backed at 21/10 having overcome world number 48 Yu Delu 5-4 in his opening game. Trump is priced at for a 5-3 success against the 2015 Players Champion.
