Jak Jones claims shock victory
Share:

World number 85 Jak Jones has secured his place at the China Open after claiming a shock victory over Judd Trump in Barnsley on Saturday. The 24-year-old had never previously beaten Trump, having met twice before, but he put in an incredible performance over the weekend to stun the world number three.

Trump, who is priced at 4/1 to win the German Masters, looked to have everything under control when he charged into a 2-0 lead with breaks of 60 and 117 but Jones showed incredible spirit to start the comeback. The Welshman went on to pick up the next two frames to level the tie and put some serious pressure on the two-time China Open winner. The clash took another twist when Trump achieved a break of 92 to regain the lead at 3-2 before racking up 56 in the sixth frame.

However, Jones went on to win that frame as he cleared up with 64 to move back on to level terms at 3-3. The duo continued to trade frames before heading into a decider which saw Jones keep his composure to compile a break of 60 and subsequently seal a 6-5 win. Meanwhile, Anthony Hamilton also booked his spot at the China Open courtesy of a dramatic comeback against David John.

Hamilton trailed 5-1 but somehow managed to drag himself back into the tie as he went on to win 6-5 in perfect preparation to defend his title at the German Masters next week.
