Greene ready to build on shock win
Share:

World number 90 Gerard Greene insists he can challenge anyone this week at the Welsh Open after knocking out Shaun Murphy on Tuesday night. The 44-year-old produced one of his best wins for several years as he outclassed Murphy, who sits 83 places above him in the world rankings. Former world champion Murphy made several errors and Greene won the first three frames with a top break of 65.

He then sealed the match on the colours to win 4-0 and he will now take on England’s Stuart Carrington in the last 64. Greene is priced at 11/10 to win, with Carrington the 4/6 favourite for Wednesday’s clash. When asked about his chances, he told World Snooker: “I know if I play well and I can challenge anyone. “Once I was 2-0 up I felt if I kept taking my chances and didn’t go for any crazy pots then I had a great chance of winning. Shaun was off his game today but that’s taking nothing away from me because I played well. “It’s up there with my best wins. I feel a bit less pressure now than I have done in the past. I work full time at the snooker club which is handy because I can practise a lot.”

Fan favourite Ronnie O’Sullivan is also in action and he faces a tricky clash with Scotland’s Graeme Dott. Belgium’s Luca Brecel meets Mike Dunn in the afternoon session, while Stuart Bingham is expected to cruise past Jackson Page.
