Bingham looking to lift his game
Share:

Stuart Bingham feels he will need to raise his game significantly from his quarter-final victory over Ali Carter if he is to beat Stephen Maguire in the English Open last four on Saturday.

Bingham moved through to the semi-finals with a 5-2 triumph over fellow Englishman Carter, with the winner set to play either Ronnie O’Sullivan or Mark Davis in Sunday’s final.

Bingham began well in his last-eight encounter, compiling a 138 total clearance to give him the opening frame. The players then traded frames until the score reached 2-2, with the 2015 world champion taking the fifth on the colours.

It seemed as though Carter would square the contest once again when on a run of 69 in the sixth but he missed a tough red to let in his opponent and Bingham cleared up with 70 to snatch the frame. He duly went on to claim the match but afterwards admitted that it was not his finest display on the green baize.

“That was probably the worst I have played all week, though I still played pretty well,” said the 42-year-old. “The fifth and sixth frames were massive. Ali would have been hurting to lose those.”

“Ali is a class player, you don’t get to two world finals otherwise. We have had our differences over the years but we have out that behind us, he is a good lad. If he had won today I would have wished him well.”

Maguire, who beat Thailand’s Noppon Saengkham is 2.20 to win the match, with Bingham on offer at 1.61, while the duo are 7.00 and 5.25 respectively to claim the tournament.
